Maria Millan, MD

Dr. Maria Millan is the President and CEO of California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM). A physician-scientist, Millan completed surgical training and postdoctoral research at Harvard Medical School-Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center then completed a transplant surgery fellowship at Stanford University School of Medicine, where she rose to associate pro-fessor and head of the pediatric organ transplant program. Millan joined CIRM in 2012 and was named president and CEO in 2017. She brings over 30 years of experience in medicine, cell bi-ology, immunology and leadership in Academia and Industry. She serves on multiple boards, including the editorial board of the journal Stem Cell Translational Medicine, the board for the Bay Area Science and Innovation Consortium and the board of the Alliance for Regenerative Medicine Foundation. Under her leadership, CIRM continues to drive the mission of accelerat-ing stem cell treatments to patients with unmet medical needs, has now funded over 1,000 scientific programs, including 68 clinical trials and has set up critical infrastructure such as the CIRM Alpha Clinics Network. In addition, she led the initiative to partner with the NHLBI to drive the “Cure Sickle Cell” Initiative, and this is yielding a robust pipeline of cell and gene ther-apy projects that are on the way to clinical testing. CIRM has recently received renewed fund-ing under Proposition 14 to invest $5.5B and to continue its mission.
